In February 2010 a packed room at Watsons Auctioneers of Christchurch witnessed the first live online auction ever held in New Zealand. Carefully conducted under the watchful eye of a keen young Auctioneer; William Toby Macalister (WTM)

The Collection of the late Bromley Cocks  being held in high regard sold exceptionally well and is cemented in New Zealand’s history. Eagerly bid for and attracting many online bids from across the globe, New Zealand and even locally from the comfort of ones home. Since then many online auctions have been held within the WTM group including Collectors cars and Motorcycles, Silver, Antiques, Paintings, Jewellery and Collectables.

WTM has well over a decade managing the sale and placement of New Zealand’s rarest and most sought after Jewels, Paintings and Wines, be it within our privately owned galleries, online or at our traditional live auction. Online auctions are very common nowadays and all the main Auction houses in New Zealand offer this service. However very few auctioneers have discovered the power of community within the social media.

We like to test new technology and continue to improve the experience when shopping with Watsons,  so we auctioned without any reserve a 1.25ct Diamond Solitaire Ring on Facebook. The auction was held February 11-12 for just 36 hours and successfully attracted interest from across New Zealand, eventually selling for $4450 after a long bidding war consisting of 30 individual bids. The recommended retail price for the ring being $8600, which was independently valued by New Zealand’s largest and most trusted jewellery Valuers at Gemlab.

The new owner from Taupo saved himself nearly 50% on this new ring. The buyer and the vendor are both happy. We are happy. You will also be happy. See something you like then click the photo and have some fun.

Not on facebook, no worries, we still offer all the same services of our traditional auction house including absentee and telephone bidding and no Buyers Premium. That’s right the our facebook auctions do not have any buyers premium. Bid and win an item for $100 and that’s what you pay!

Facebook has over 2 billion registered users…….. 2 Billion users, they can’t all be wrong….
